The town was first mentioned in a document from the 13th century under the name of Sancta Agatha as a medieval burgh of Saxon origin. As centuries went by, due to the large number of guilds operating here, Agnita became renowned as a crafts town based on a local economy. The guilders - tanners, shoemakers, furriers, coopers or potters were famous all over Transylvania. This is precisely why in 1376 Agnita is also awarded the privilege to organize annual fairs.
Like any other Transylvanian burgh, Agnita was also facing the constant danger of attacks so that in 1466 they built the fortress and the gothic hall church which they fortified a century later.
However, in the 20th century when the guilds disappeared and the first factories saw the light of day, Agnita was turned into an agri-industrial little town and this image has stuck with it until the present days.
However, besides all that, each year in February Agnita’s name comes back to the memory of those who love Saxon traditions, be it locals or tourists coming from Germany as the end of the month is marked by the famous The Escape of the Lole festival.
