Trails in the Făgăraș Mountains
Adventure, open-air exercise, delightful scenery, fun and, above all, health! Nothing compares to a mountain hike on the highest peaks of the Romanian Carpathians. The Făgăraş Mountains with their rocky summits have always been a challenge for those who wish to climb the highest mountain peaks: The Moldoveanu Summit (2544 m), The Negoiu Summit (2535 m), the Laiţa, Vânătoarea lui Buteanu, Scara, Suru or Paltinu summits, all well above 2000 m. Another well-known attraction is the Transfăgărăşan, the 2300 m high road which connects the southern and northern sides of the Făgăraş.
In the county of Sibiu, the Făgăraş Mountains (part of the Southern Carpathians) cover the central glacial sector of this group, bordered to the west by the Olt River and to the east by the Arpaş Valley. The Făgăraş trails will take you through breath-taking landscapes offered by the peaks as well as by the countless glacial lakes (Bâlea, Avrig, Podrăgel, Lacul Doamnei, Călţun), waterfalls (Negoiu, Şerbota, Bâlea, Valea Moaşei), the extremely rare fauna (marmots, chamois, deer, stags, wild cats, capercaillies) and the differentiated vegetation of the alpine floors (from deciduous forests to juniper and mountain pine shrubs, Leontopodium alpinum or Rhododendron kotschyi).
Before setting out for your journey, make sure you are properly equipped, watch the weather forecast and follow the instructions of specialized maps - this will be very useful.
PS Don’t forget your camera!
