This church was built in mid-18th century at a time when the orthodox locals were oppressed by the Austro-Hungarians and by the wish of the Court in Vienna to impose Greek Catholicism as a religion.
To express their sufferance, the locals from Sibiel painted the church walls with biblical scenes in which the Roman soldiers are dressed in Austro-Hungarian military uniforms (a unique feature in Mărginimea Sibiului).
Another unique element is the icons representing the 14 popes having led the Church of Rome before the Great Schism. Right near the church you may visit the Glass Icons Museum.
