On a wooded hill above the village of Fântânele an old orthodox church scans the horizon…
In their transhumance paths, the local shepherds often travelled to Russia and Moldova and each time they returned to Fântânele their desire to build an imposing church like the ones they had seen in Russia grew stronger.
In the late 18th century the locals collected the necessary money and started building the new church. The style of the construction is byzantine but its interior was inspired by the Moldavian churches. From their travels the shepherds brought Russian icons which can still be admired in the church nave today.
The exterior painting is also impressive: 58 icons surround the church in a fresco under the eaves, representing scenes from the lives of the saints.
