At the beginning of the 19th century there were two stone churches erected in Cârţişoara because the settlement was made up of two villages - Oprea and Streza; therefore, each community had its own church.
The painting was done by the Grecu family of painters. Among them, Nicolae was the most talented and his style is easily noticeable. He was famous in the whole region for his personal interpretation of the biblical scenes and how he put them into paintings. In Nicolae’s paintings of this church the Romans mocking Jesus are impersonated by Austro-Hungarian soldiers.
