Placed on a hill in the centre of Biertan lies one of the most imposing and solidly fortified peasant burghs from Transylvania.
A true economic centre of the region which was also declared the centre of the Saxon Episcopate in the 16th century Biertan thus became a target coveted by many invaders. Therefore it needed a very imposing church surrounded by strong ramparts.
The church was built in the early 16th century as a late gothic hall church. It has kept its aspect until these days and the elements inside are inestimable items whose story goes back many centuries. As soon as you pass the threshold you will be fascinated by the imposing altar with its 28 painted scenes, the 16th century pulpit, the plane relief artistic pews, the Anatolian carpets and the impressive vestry door.
The disposition of the 3 precincts surrounding the church, the 6 defence towers and the 3 bastions tells very interesting things about the locals’ everyday life. Access to the fortress was possible through a covered staircase climbing by the Guard’s Tower (today there is a small book shop here); at the top of the stairs, in front of the church, there is a big stone where a long time ago they used to put all the villains for the community to know who they are.

Did you know...?
The eastern bastion of the fortress was also a lock-up room for arguing spouses. They were locked in the bastion for a while and left alone to settle their differences.
The vestry door was made in 1515 and it is extremely valuable due to its one-of-a-kind locking system. It is equipped with 19 locks driven simultaneously by one single key. The system was awarded a prize at a Paris exhibition in 1910.
