The church lies on a hill dominating the village. It was built in the 14th century and two centuries later it was strengthened with a defence wall and towers.
The choir is super-elevated in the first years of the 16th century and on this occasion the church also takes over a defensive role as the choir is fortified and equipped with embrasures.
The church had a gothic vault with ribs; however, this was taken down in the 19th century when they also built the balconies on the north and west sides of the church. The gate tower built to the east of the church is impressive and it is equipped with horizontal embrasures; they also bear signs of elements specific to a portcullis.
The church is surrounded by four defensive towers symbolizing the four cardinal directions.
