Ever since medieval times, Cisnădie was renowned for its large number of guilds and particularly for its cloth-making and weaving tradition. Its positioning near the villages from Mărginimea Sibiului where the raising of sheep was the main occupation allowed for the emergence of wool processing workshops.
Between the 18th and 20th century these workshops were transformed into manufactures and factories during the communist era. Cisnădie was known as a real centre of textile industry and its wool carpets were sold all over the world.
The museum housed by the Saxon fortress displays various craftsmanship objects placed in chronological order which take us from the oldest days of its existence to the beginning of the 21st century when the famous carpet factory from Cisnădie was still operational.
