First it used to be the residence of the Altemberger chief administrator, then for 400 years it was the town hall building and today it houses the history museum… this is the Altemberger house, an impressive edifice of gothic civil architecture.
The museum familiarises us with the early lives of the people from this region of Transylvania by displaying their housing facilities, customs, beliefs and everyday activities. The permanent exhibition is made up of: the Ancient Lapidarium, the Medieval Lapidarium, Weapons and Armours, Fire Weapons, Transylvanian Bottles, Guilds of Sibiu, Coins, Treasury and other items of heritage.
Next to the permanent exhibition the museum also has two beautiful courtyards. In the first, the visitor is welcomed by a series of statues of Hermann, the founder of the city in various poses surprising the typologies of the 17th century city dweller: knight, banker, student, foot soldier, butcher, healer, mayor, innkeeper, and minstrel. The second courtyard, also called The Martyrs’ Garden, displays figurative sculpture work arts.
