The Mountains

The entire south-western administrative area of Sibiu is covered - either entirely or partially - by the majestic relief of the Cindrel, Lotru (Șteflești) and Făgăraș mountains. They are a distinct part of the Southern Carpathians. Beyond their summits like walls of a medieval fortress, to the north, we encounter everywhere a natural and human heritage whose value, when combined with the socio-cultural realities, outlines the image of the world and communities who have always lived here in close communion with the land.

30% of the county’s surface is covered by mountains, while 70% is represented by foothills and plateaux; due to its natural value, a significant part of this mountain region was included in the Natura 2000 sites. The main purpose of these sites is to preserve the variety of plant and animal species.
